Last day :-(

For the first time on a UMVIM trip, we have an afternoon flight out of PAP. Which leaves us some time to do whatever.

We took a drive up to the Baptist Mission. And to our surprise, the shop and cafe (where the scenery is best) were closed!!!! They were on vacation.

Luckily we stopped on the way up to take in the views. Beautiful!!!

We then went to the overlook. From this location you can see ALL of Port au Prince. Approximately 7 million people live in PAP. 70% of the population of the entire country.

We followed up the sightseeing with lunch at Epidor. I think almost every UMVIM team visits this restaurant. It has both Haitian and American food, it’s has A/C and it has ICE CREAM! Which is highly desirable after working in Haiti for a week or so.

So, what exactly do we do in Haiti?

Here are some photos of how the church here at La Tremblay looked last time I was here. The team from St. Paul UMC, from Bridge City, Texas graciously allowed me to join their team.

The exterior walls were almost completed.

There was still lots of scaffolding. No windows or doors were in place.

Very little finish work had begun. And there were no stairway to the balcony.

Good news, bad news

Good news- it rained, a lot!!! This area hasn’t had real rainfall in months

Bad news – its muddy as we head off to the trenches aka. security wall footing

Good news- last night was MUCH cooler, for the first time since arriving I didn’t wake up once drowning in perspiration

Bad news- the humidity was crazy high as soon as the sun came up

20120915-163113.jpg

Good news- there is much less dust today as we work, live and walk w/in feet of the road

Bad news- today the mosquitos are plentiful

The kids (big and little) screamed w/ delight and ran around playing in it!!!

Epic Fail

20120914-122845.jpg

Note to self- don’t tell those that actually follow you on the blog-a-sphere and FB you are about to post LOTS of photos before you can actually make it happen!!!!

It seems the cell service provider for La Tremblay was in the midst of a change as we arrived!!! Yesterday it was Viola, today it’s Digicel. No wonder I was having trouble.

It’s just another way God reminds me that even when I THINK I know what’s going……….He’s really just shaking His head and thinking, “not so much child of mine”!

Later tater (we are headed back to work shortly and I’m going to get a creole lesson from the kids)

La Tremblay- photos galore

Let’s try this again friends. La Tremblay doesn’t get a very strong signal for data. That coupled w/ power supply issues, makes posting here and to Facebook a real challenge20120914-081155.jpg

Power supply

So, after a busy day of travel, set up and working at our site, the battery on my phone got pretty low

No problem, we’ll crank the generator up, let it run, recharge everyone’s phones, cameras, etc, and be good to go.

That was the plan, but wait, when you are in Haiti, having a plan is more like having an overall suggestion or idea of how you’d like for things to go.

The generator ran out of gas before the batteries were completely charged.

I’m working on limited time here folks!

So you get only two pictures today, the toilet and one more.

If you’ve ever lived without one,
travelled to a developing country,
had no electricity (or a very limited amount of it),
no hot water,
no running water of any kind,
no shower (hot or cold)………

Then let me tell you, the answer is a resounding YES’!!!!!!!
